Most website owners spend allot of their time and energy finding good back links or they hire someone to do this task. Searching for places to add your website URL is very time consuming. Here are some problems with link building:

  2. You must be able to submit your URL in a category or theme that best describes your website niche
  3. Buying links often shows fantastic results for a brief time only.
  4. Linking to a Directory that has massive amounts of links in it is counter productive. You need to find directories with few submissions in your niche.

  6. Once you find a source where you can leave a link it should be do follow so you can receive the “Google Juice.”
  7. With all of the above you often have to have your submission approved.

Other things you may want to consider:

  1. Link text (anchor text) – what does it say? If your site is about “blue widgets” does your link text say “blue widgets” or something similar?
  2. Nearby text relevance – does text before and after the anchor text of the link to you support the theme of the anchor text?
  3. Page relevance – does the page where the link appears have a similar theme to your page?
  4. Site relevance – does the site where the link appears have a similar theme to your page?
  5. Is your link from a reputable directory, blog, website or forum?

Paid Back Links Revisited: Throwing Good Money Away!

As mentioned earlier, it is common practice to go out and purchase links. Many major SEO firms continue to recommend this practice. However, buying back links can be very dangerous. Remember that a purchased link is not a vote for your site either. Essentially, Google uses two major techniques to detect purchased links:

  1. Google’s algorithms search for clues near your link. For instance, phrases like “Advertisers” or “Sponsors” represent an obvious clue. Moreover, if you purchased link shows up among a group of links about unrelated topics, this is another clue that the link is purchased.
  1. Like it or not, Google accepts reports of purchased links from third parties (for example, your competitors). They take these reports and use a variety of methods to check them out.

Google detects a far larger percentage of purchased links then most people believe. Once Google detects sites that are engaging in the purchasing of links, they take remedy the situation. In the best case scenario they basically tag the links as purchased. This means that the links have either no effect on your rankings, or worst case, you your website could be sandboxes. How long this ban will last is anybody’s guess.
